History

Tomato Adventure was released in Japan on January 25, 2002. Unfortunately, the game was never offically released in any other regions due to its poor reception. AlphaDream would discuss its failings in a later interview.

Around this time, AlphaDream and Nintendo hosted a contest to promote the game. An online application for participants to fill out was released. Up for grabs was one kg of tomatoes from the Kochi Virtue Valley area. Unfortunately, most of the content surrounding this contest is currently lost.

The contest ended on February 28th, 2002. It is assumed that twenty winners were selected to win the prize around this time.

On August 26th, 2015, Tomato Adventure was rereleased on Japan's Wii U Virtual Console service. The game was sold for 715 yen. Click here to watch the trailer. Click here to visit the Japanese website detailing the rerelease.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released for the Nintendo Switch on December 7th, 2018. Both Demille and the Tomatrio are represented as collectible spirits.

Certain members of AlphaDream were interviewed by GameInformer's Kyle Hilliard, following the release of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. In the interview, more information regarding the reception of Tomato Adventure is revealed. Yoshihiko Maekawa of AlphaDream stated, "The reason why is the age group we were targeting was a bit too low and a bit too small. We also had some trouble with the battle system, and it wasn’t received well at the time of release".

A ROM of Gimmick Land was leaked. Gimmick Land was a game that AlphaDream developed for the Game Boy Color. It is essentialy the prototype of Tomato Adventure, but it was never released in any offical capacity despite being essentialy finished. Instead, the developers improved what they had already made in order to accomodate for the better hardware of the Game Boy Advance. Eventually, the title was changed to Tomato Adventure.

An unoffical English fan-translation of Tomato Adventure was released on July 27th, 2021.
